Nicola Kuperus

In Nicola Kuperus’ work, it’s always a little bit dark, even when the sun is shining. It’s noir with a sense of humor, not unlike Nicola’s own personality. A lady of many talents, this black-haired raven flits between her carefully-staged photography and upholding her half of Detroit’s dark electro-punk outfit Adult. with partner Adam Miller. Typically, there is no boundary between her visual art and music–Kuperus and Miller have snapped, sewed, painted, and made videos to coincide with their sounds.

Adult.’s last big project was a 40-minute long silent film called Decampment. The art-house horror movie was screened in Detroit, New York, and LA in 2008 and each time the duo played the soundtrack to it live. “It’s like a rock opera, but with neither of those elements!,” says Nicola. Accompanying the film, Adult. released a limited series of collectible 7″s entitled The Decampment Trilogy; each record contains a piece of the soundtrack and comes with a 16”x20” photograph taken by Nicola.

In between spreading darkness throughout the land, Adult. also took the time to release the four-song Let’s Feel Bad Together EP last October on their Ersatz Audio imprint.
