Brian McCarty
Southern California’s Brian McCarty will take his toys anywhere to make them happy. He’s hung out with Master Shake in a Vegas pool and the rough Miami streets with Rockstar Games’ Vice City vinyl; figurines frequently drag him from Malibu to the Mojave desert to demand to have their photos taken. All in a day’s work for McCarty, who is one of most iconic names in the nascent field of “art toy” photography.
McCarty’s biggest project these days is a massive fine art series called Cover the Moon, a photographic pantomime that follows a cast of toy characters (designed by Eric So) on a journey through the American West. He’s also developing a number of animation and TV projects for major cable networks. To see more of McCarty’s unique style, check the catalog for the 2007 museum exhibit Beyond Ultraman: Seven Artists Explore the Vinyl Frontier, or his forthcoming book, Art-Toys: Photographs by Brian McCarty, published by Baby Tattoo.
