Andrew Pommier
We hit up Canadian artist and all-around nice guy Andrew Pommier to ask him what he’s up to lately, and we got this candid reply: “These days I’m living in a small, uninsulated coach house in Downtown Eastside Vancouver with my girlfriend Brie and a small, bitter cat. The neighborhood is considered one of the worst places in Canada due to the large population of drug addicts, mental patients, and prostitutes but the rent is cheap and I’m close to my studio space, which is about a five-minute bike ride from home. It’s sketchy but interesting.”
Ahh, the perils of the struggling artist… although, one could argue, Pommier is hardly struggling any longer. Pommier – who rose to fame on the melancholy characters he’s created for skate companies like Toy Machine and RVCA – has gone as far as Sydney and Shanghai to exhibit his stuff, as well as doing signature graphics for Zune, Adidas, and Rossignol skis’ Seven Deadly Sins line (alongside Steve Caballero and Andy Howell). His trademark smoking animals, giant squid, and sad-face youths also grace animated spots for Fuel TV, shirts for Stüssy, and, oh, the list goes on and on. Good thing Vancouver’s unsavory characters haven’t cottoned on to the quiet talent in their midst.
